About the Virtual Meter
The Virtual Meter is Nagara's digital solution for fair ride charges. It works like a traditional auto or taxi meter - tracking distance and waiting time - using GPS from the driver's phone, with route and fare calculations performed on our servers according to government-approved tariff rules.
Why we built it
Every ride should be priced fairly and transparently. The Virtual Meter gives you a live, itemised fare during your trip so you always know what you are paying for - no surge pricing, no hidden algorithms, and no surprises at the end of the ride.
How it works
During an active ride, the Nagara driver app records the vehicle's location using GPS. Our system then:
- Measures distance travelled along the actual route, using road-aware calculations where possible so short GPS jumps do not inflate the fare.
- Tracks waiting time when the vehicle is stationary - for example at traffic signals or while you are boarding - in the same way a physical meter would. Read more in What is wait time?
- Applies the correct tariff for your vehicle type, including base fare, per-kilometre rate, wait-time charges, and night-time multipliers where applicable.
- Updates your fare in real time in the Nagara app, showing distance, wait time, and the running total.
Government-mandated rates
Nagara operates on regulatory fare-compliant tariffs approved for auto rickshaws and taxis. The Virtual Meter uses the same rate structure as a government-calibrated physical meter - base fare, included distance, per-km charges, free wait allowance, and per-minute wait rates - so what you see in the app reflects the official fare card for your ride type.
We are India's first auto service to receive regulatory approval for fare compliance. The Virtual Meter is a core part of how we deliver on that promise.
Accuracy and fairness
GPS-based metering needs careful handling. Our fare engine filters unreliable location points, ignores implausible jumps in speed, and treats long gaps in tracking sensibly so you are not overcharged for signal loss or GPS noise. When the vehicle is clearly stopped, waiting time still accrues fairly.
If your auto has a working physical meter, the driver may enter the final meter reading at the end of the ride. Toll and parking charges, when applicable, are added separately and shown clearly on your ride summary.
What you see in the app
While your ride is in progress, the Virtual Meter card in the Nagara app shows:
- Current fare - the running total based on distance and wait time
- Distance - kilometres travelled so far
- Wait - time spent stationary (chargeable after the free allowance). See What is wait time? for how it is calculated and charged.
- Total time - elapsed time since the ride started
